Washing machine leaking: finding where it’s coming from
Where the water appears on the floor often tells you which part has failed.
Turn the machine off at the wall and turn off both taps. Wipe the floor dry so you can see where fresh water appears.
At the front
Check the door seal for tears, hair and small objects trapped in the folds. A leak from the detergent drawer can also run down the front of the machine.
At the back
Check the inlet hoses at the taps and at the machine. Rubber washers harden with age, and a small drip can become a burst hose.
Underneath
Water under the machine often means a pump, internal hose or tub seal. Check the pump filter cap is screwed in fully, then leave the rest to a technician.
During the wash only
Too much detergent can create suds that push out through vents and seals. Use the amount the label recommends, and low-suds detergent for front loaders.
When to call
If water reaches a power point or keeps coming back, leave the machine off and book a visit.
